How we write and review chart guides

ChartsMakers is practical software, not a journal. Still, chart advice can change how people read data, so we keep our methods visible and correct mistakes quickly.

What we publish

We publish chart-making tools and short guides for common statistics and data visualization tasks: histograms, box plots, scatter plots, pie charts, dot plots, stem and leaf plots, Sankey diagrams, and Cleveland dot plots.

Who reviews the content

Guides are maintained by the ChartsMakers Editorial Team. We review content for statistical accuracy, current software behavior, and whether the instructions are clear enough for a student, teacher, analyst, or everyday spreadsheet user to follow.

Source standards

For software-specific instructions, we prefer official documentation from the product or project being discussed. For statistical definitions, we prefer established references such as NIST/SEMATECH, Tukey's exploratory data analysis conventions, and documentation from major statistics libraries.

When a guide depends on an external product interface, we avoid pretending it is permanent. If a menu name, chart option, or export behavior changes, we update the guide after review.

How tools are checked

We test chart behavior with small example datasets before publishing major changes. For calculations, we compare against known statistical rules or library behavior: for example, Tukey-style 1.5×IQR fences for box plot outliers, Pearson correlation for scatter plots, and explicit bin choices for histograms.

Privacy and data handling

Chart data is processed in the browser. The tools do not require an account, and pasted or uploaded datasets are not sent to our servers. See the Privacy Policy for the full data handling explanation.

Corrections

If you find a factual issue, unclear wording, broken source link, or chart behavior that does not match the guide, email [email protected]. Please include the page URL and a short description of the problem. We prioritize corrections that affect statistical interpretation, privacy claims, or user workflow.
